Life List #17 - Learn a Foreign Language

Photo from: http://www.language-school.in/

I have officially started tackling one item on my Life List!  I am learning to speak Italian.  I am excited to learn a language in general, and Italian especially.  I would love to travel there, and the great food reputation was recently reinforced to me by some Europeans I met.  Also learning a language not only benefits my brain and myself as a person.  It is also great for my kids to learn while they are still younger.

Right now I am using the Duolingo app.  I love it.  You learn the language like a game, and you must read, write, and speak what you learn.  I am currently on level 5 and am learning foods.  The grammar is different, but it's not too unfamiliar since I took Latin in high school.  I am realizing how much vocabulary I will need, and that is a bit daunting, but I know I can do it.  I think if I had the chance to actually be in the culture, I could pick up on it fairly quickly.  That brings me to the only other resource I have explored, www.fluentin3months.com.  This blog chronicles the life of a polyglot.  He sets himself language "missions" to accomplish.  I like the website and I am glad I visited, however his main tip seems to be to immerse yourself in the culture.  Travelling to Italy and speaking nothing else for three months just isn't in the cards for me right now.

I know there are many more resources to explore and things to learn about Italy.  I have created a board on Pinterest dedicated to Italy and learning Italian.  This way I can save the resources and get to them as I am able.  If anyone is interested, the board can be found here.
